The aims of the programme are to allow students to:

-Acquire and develop the necessary technical and practical skills and personal attributes to perform successfully as socially responsible, creative professionals within the field of Illustration and connective disciplines.
-Engage with a pertinent, current and inclusive curriculum that is appropriate and responsive to the needs and aspirations of all students.
-Develop a creative, reflective and self-critical approach which enables students to locate their study and creative practice within the wider social, cultural, historical, critical, technical and professional contexts of Illustration.
-Be autonomous critical thinkers and make contextual judgements of their own work and that of others.
-Develop transferable skills and nurture attitudes for life-long, self-determined learning, in order to create or respond to a broad range of career opportunities or to undertake further study.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

-Creatively utilise processes, techniques and materials in the production of coherent, individually appropriate and critically informed work that is capable of operating within the professional context of Illustration.
-Communicate ideas, interpretations, intentions and outcomes within appropriate academic and professional contexts, to a culturally diverse audience.
-Integrate practical, creative and critical skills in the production and presentation of a studio practice that is representative of an individual and professional creative Illustrator or Animator
-Locate their studio practice within appropriate social, cultural,
-historical, critical, technical and professional contexts, including a wider global perspective of Illustration and the creative industries.
-Use entrepreneurial, creative and transferable skills in answering Illustration project briefs/commissions through the process of research, analysis, experimentation, development and articulation.
-Demonstrate a capacity for autonomy and critical reflection, in a range of creative scenarios.

Level 5: Contextualisation
At the end of Level 5, you will be able to:

-Compare and contrast ideas, conceptual strategies and select appropriate techniques, processes, and materials.
-Demonstrate an ability to interpret and communicate, both visually and verbally, and work effectively as an individual and where required, collaboratively.

-Locate your practice within social, cultural, historical, technical and professional contexts.
-Respond to the requirements and challenges of a project brief with an increased awareness of a designated audience.

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.

It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks of your submission. Each Module Handbook will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments. Once your work is submitted it will go through a rigorous process of assessment, which may include first and second marking and moderation before a final mark is reached. You will be provided with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments on CAGD. You are formatively assessed throughout the course through individual and group tutorials and feedback recorded through the Journal on CAGD. Your summative assessments take place through a mixture of physical submissions (portfolio of body of work, developmental and preparatory work or single project work), through electronic presentations on the CAGD platform and physical presentations to staff and peers, and through written, filmic and/or audio submissions for the Critical Study.

Results from module assessments and decisions on progression to the next level of study (e.g., from Level 4 to Level 5 of an undergraduate degree) or awards (if you are in the final level) are available on the Results Online system: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/exams-assessments-and-awards/results-online/.

Results will appear in Results Online within five working days of the date of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided).

The University recognises that, from time to time, students may encounter issues which may prevent them from being able to submit or take assessment. The course explores the breadth of Illustration and encourages you to push and cross boundaries. This results in a wide constituency of practices, media and techniques. You are encouraged, after a period of initial orientation and skills acquisition, to pursue your own negotiated creative practice through the course. This approach requires a broad and diagnostic period where practical/technical, creative and critical skills are developed both as individuals and within negotiated collaborative endeavours. This is followed by an increased focus on your own individual practice (this may still take place as a part of a team or within specific collaborative projects).

You experience a full range of learning and teaching activities, including practical workshops, formal lectures, seminars, informal studio discussions, live projects, critiques and demonstrations, all appropriate to the study of the subject and aligning with professional practices.
Through project briefs you are introduced to the main technical workshops and through repeated use of these facilities become technically proficient as you progress through the course. The range of technical (digital and analogue) skills, processes and techniques that you are encouraged to engage with builds the varied skillset appropriate to employment within the sector.

External 'live' projects, placements (where appropriate), exhibitions and commissions are a significant aspect of the latter half of the course providing you with the opportunity to explore a mixture of commercial and community/public body-based briefs. These projects provide you with authentic real-world experiences and insights into the professional context of Illustration as well as preparing your skillsets accordingly.

Lecture and seminar programmes enable you to contextualise your practice in the form of essays and other forms of writing and presentation. The Critical Study, an important part of the latter half of the course, requires you to integrate your practical concerns with theoretical and critical approaches. Seminars take place to aid the writing of this document in all Levels. The Critical Study has been designed to fulfil the separate roles of academic dissertation, a professional development document as well as to document the work you produce. As such, the Critical Study is primarily a personal document that has proved to be extremely beneficial to a range of students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia as well as students from widening participation backgrounds. There is also a department and School-wide Visiting Lecturer programme that seeks to introduce you to a range of professional practices.

The University expects you to attend and contribute fully to all mandatory sessions on your timetable as set out in your student contract. Engagement in your lectures, seminars and practicals is an important part of your learning - contributing both to the University community and the learning experience of your fellow students on the course. This includes engagement in scheduled virtual learning and activities and meetings in online environments related to your studies.

We monitor your engagement at the University as regular attendance and academic achievement are closely linked. Moreover, by monitoring your engagement and attendance we can identify students who may need our guidance or support at an early stage to help them progress in their studies. This is part of our commitment to ensuring an excellent education and experience and supporting your success at Leeds Beckett.

The University does understand that from time to time there is good reason why you cannot attend a class, and in this instance you must contact your School office to let them know. This may then be recorded as an 'authorised absence'.

Please note that any attendance reports can be shared with you and your Course team. You might be asked to contact your School office so that appropriate academic or pastoral support can be offered, should your attendance record give cause for concern.

If you are unable to study because of another illness for more than 14 consecutive days (including weekends), you must provide us with a Fit Note.

You can send a digital copy of your Fit Note to your Course Administrator, and then send the original by post.

If you are absent through illness on the day of an examination or assignment deadline and you intend to apply for mitigation, you must also provide us with details as possible. Your submission for mitigation may be made online and the circumstances surrounding it may be self-certified unless your period of absence is prolonged. Generally, all absences of 2 weeks or more will require the submission of verifiable documentary evidence.

Any Leeds Beckett student who suspects they may have, or have been diagnosed as having a serious infectious disease such as coronavirus, Mumps, TB, measles, meningitis or chicken pox should not attend campus. For notifiable diseases, students should notify their Course Director or Course Administrator as soon as possible giving information regarding which groups of students (and/or colleagues and clients on placements) you have been in contact with and when. For some diseases, such as TB and meningitis, your doctor and our Student Wellbeing Team have a responsibility to notify the West Yorkshire Public Health Protection Team who may also wish to speak to you (or your family) to determine if others require screening or medication. Work related activity is an integral part of the courses delivery and is therefore implicit within all studio modules. The course offers multidisciplinary experience within the expanded field of Illustration. Students are tutored through decisions regarding specialisms and professional practice. Not all students may source a placement or internship relevant to their particular practice but those that do are offered the opportunity to make industry contacts and negotiate an internship or placement as part of their final year of study. An opportunity will not constitute "a placement" until it has approval, both in terms of the activity content and the employer's compliance with Health and Safety criteria. As part of the approval process, all employers will be asked to agree to a Placement Providers Declaration, confirming that appropriate measures are in place for the safety and well-being of our placement students. Specific learning outcomes will be agreed with employers for all placements and internships in order to quality assure the student experience and help manage consistency.

Placements, commissions and internships will be sourced by the student and must be agreed as 2-3 weeks in length, if undertaken within term time. In order to ensure that a placement opportunity satisfies the learning outcomes of our course of study and that the role is appropriate, a designated course team member will approve any opportunities that students source themselves.

Throughout your studies you work on a wide range of projects and apply your skills to a variety of challenging creative scenarios. You learn to navigate the complexities of live projects and the demands of real-world problems. You develop the confidence to act with autonomy, to self-initiate, collaborate and lead teams. You may manage client negotiations, compete in national and international competitions, undertaken industry-led workshops, curate and participated in exhibitions, secure internships and work experience, bid for external work; and importantly you develop the critical awareness to consider how the Illustration you produce can affect positive change in the lives of others. You are encouraged to use both your course specific skills - creative, aesthetic, technical and critical - as well as the more generic skills - interpersonal, communicative, independent, entrepreneurial - to become robust, adaptable practitioners responsive to the needs of employers and to the wider opportunities that may present themselves. These skills are addressed explicitly through individual tutorial support with your tutors (who are themselves practitioners), and through Critical Study seminars and presentations.

The skills you will gain are both subject-specific and more general transferable skills that will benefit you in your chosen career in the creative industries. Subject-specific skills include an aptitude with both digital and analogue communication technologies, both in terms of hardware and software, creative and divergent forms of thinking, the ability to ideate, conceptualise and research, to visualise and solve communication problems by producing artefacts that will function within the context of illustration. You will also learn about the theory and history of art and design to contextualise and support your own practice. More transferable skills include collaborative team-working, the ability to present your work and to listen to and reflect on constructive criticism, to research and work independently initiating your own projects. Others include the ability to self-critically reflect on and evaluate your own developmental progress on the course as well as interpersonal communication skills.

You will have opportunities to gain recognition during your time at Leeds Beckett University for the extra activities you do in addition to your studies, including volunteering, student societies, playing in our University sports teams and being a Course Representative.

By joining a society with Leeds Beckett Students' Union, you can make new friends, have fun, try something new and enhance your CV - societies provide a great opportunity to learn new skills and improve your existing ones. It can be difficult to get to know new people at university but don't worry, everyone is in the same boat! Our Leeds Beckett Students' Union believe that joining a student-led society is the best way to meet new people and make lifelong friends. There are so many societies out there - from course-based to hobby-based to religious to political and campaigning. As a student on the BA (Hons) Illustration course you are encouraged to be enterprising. Through your individual creative practices, you will articulate their ideas, make artefacts, and may promote and sell these products through self-organised group exhibitions, self-promotional websites and through self-published magazines and printed matter. You may liaise with external clients and agencies through your own individual practice. This is formalised on the course specifically in Level 5 and 6, where you have the opportunity to work on 'live' projects. You are also encouraged to foster external relationships, through industry mentoring and internships. The onus is on the you to be resourceful and pursue these opportunities. You demonstrate your enterprising skills through a number of modules in level 5 and 6 and these are embedded in the Learning Outcomes for each of these modules.
Digital literacy is central to the course - it is evidenced in all modules across all Levels. Level 4 you are introduced to the central e-Learning tool - the CAGD (VLE) website and its varied uses - most notably to communicate with fellow students and staff, to upload work, to provide a platform for self-reflective feedback through the Journal. CAGD also allows you to organise and curate their work for presentation using the ePortfolio aspects of the site. You also access course materials from CAGD and use it as a repository for your research into the subject. In Level 4 you also become conversant with a range of digital imaging software and hardware through practical demonstrations, workshops, and seminars. This software allows you to create imagery for print, animation, screen, interactive and web based, moving image, page layout, typography and 3D visualisation. You are also required to present your work for formative and summative assessment online, again predominantly through CAGD but also through the use of presentation software. You are asked throughout Level 5 and 6 to challenge and critique your web-based research and to understand some of the implications of digital technologies for the dissemination of knowledge (of which Illustrators and Animators are a key part).

The course provides students with the opportunity for work-related learning through an extensive range of 'live' project work undertaken in levels 5 and 6. Students are encouraged to undertake national and international competition briefs which are externally assessed by industry professionals and academics. Students have opportunities to gain professional mentoring from visiting practitioners from diverse fields within the creative industries.

Work related activity is an integral part of the courses delivery and is therefore implicit within all studio modules. The course offers multidisciplinary experience within the expanded field of Illustration. Students are tutored through decisions regarding specialisms and professional practice. Not all students may source a placement or internship relevant to their particular practice but those that do are offered the opportunity to make industry contacts and negotiate an internship or placement as part of their final year of study.
Students may negotiate placements or internships within design studios or in-house design departments and design-related opportunities within charitable, arts-based, educational organisations. Students experience a wide range of work related activities, which may include design for print and screen, preparation for client presentations, concept development, sourcing of digital content and administrative duties.

The course draws upon its alumni and local, national and international connections to locate and establish opportunities for internships and placements. Previous successes have seen graduates undertake internships at Build, Dust, Field, Spin and The Tetley, which have subsequently led to employment. If you have a question or a problem relating to your course, your Course Administrator is there to help you. Course Administrators work closely with academic staff and can make referrals to teaching staff or to specialist professional services as appropriate. They can give you a confirmation of attendance letter, and a transcript. Your Academic Advisor will be an academic member of staff who teaches you on your course. Your Course Director will make sure that you are given the contact details of your Academic Advisor at the beginning of each year, usually in your course induction. Student Advice can also help in the practical elements of university. The team will produce your first campus card and assist you in replacing your campus card if needed throughout your time at Leeds Beckett. Register with us

Library Academic Support

The Library Academic Support Team can help you develop your academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing and analysing data, and research skills such as how to find, use and evaluate information for your studies. The team liaises with your lecturers to provide the information resources you need for your subject and to arrange academic skills sessions to support you in your studies.

The team maintains a number of websites and modules to support your learning:

• In your Subject guide, you'll find a variety of information resources which have been selected as a good starting point for research in that area. These are available on the Skills and Subject Support web page or via My Beckett.
• On the Skills for Learning website, you'll find online resources covering topics such as essay writing, research and time management, English Language and academic English plus information to help you reference and avoid plagiarism, alongside details of workshops that are designed to help you succeed in your assessments. OneDrive Leeds Beckett is your individual file storage with 1TB of storage space. With OneDrive you can access and share your files across your devices. University life can have its ups and downs, and occasionally you may find yourself in need of advice. That's where we come in. Here at the SU we have a free advice service that is here just for you, the students at Leeds Beckett University.

The Advice Service at LBSU is a confidential, non-judgmental service run by professional advisers.

The service is independent from the University, so if you are having any problems with your course you can talk confidentially with us - although we do work with the University to find the best solutions, we would only contact them with your permission. BA (Hons) Illustration uses the CAGD learning platform (cagd.co.uk) as its primary online course organisation and communications platform. Electronic resources will be provided via CAGD, and you will be expected to gather your own personalised resources in CAGD as your progress through the course. Being a Course Rep provides you with an opportunity to enhance your own learning and the development of relevant professional and employability skills alongside your studies. As a Course Rep you would play an important role in:

• Acting as a point of contact and advocate for students on your course and in supporting their active engagement.
• Gathering feedback from students on your course to inform enhancements to the quality of your course and the student experience.
• Facilitating good communication between students and staff on the course.

Part-time delivery is usually at half the intensity of the FT equivalent course, although there may be flexibility to increase your pace of study to shorten the overall course duration.
